Madrid, My First Love

My love affair with Madrid started back when I was 19 years old, when I did a summer abroad program midway through college (which may or may not have contributed to dropping out of the Biology-Pre-Medical career route). #SorryMom I spent that blissful summer devouring Spanish plays and poetry at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares. In between Lit classes, I befriended locals and set off with them to explore the city. Every excursion was met with loads of art, history and culture. I'll never forget how the energy of the city shook my bones and made me feel alive.  Upon returning from that trip, I was never the same. I knew that from that point on, I would continue to search for ways to return.

Me enamoré de Madrid con 19 años, cuando me fui un verano de erasmus mi segundo año en la uni (lo cual pudo o no haber contribuido a mi decisión de dejar los estudios para una carrera médica). #LoSientoMami Pasé ese verano maravillosamente, devorando obras de teatro y poesía española en La Universidad de Alcalá de Henares. Entre mis clases de literatura, me hice amigos con otros estudiantes de la uni y salimos a explorar la ciudad. Cada excursión me acercó a un montón de arte, historia y cultura. Nunca podré olvidar cómo la energía de la ciudad me contagió y me hizo sentir viva. Al volver de ese viaje, me vi muy afectada por el viaje, tanto que sabía que desde ese momento en adelante, buscaría cualquier manera de volver.

EN Even on the worst of days, I love how some of the above photos show what you can come across in the matter of a 30 minute power walk.

ES Hasta en los peores días, me encanta que las fotos de arriba muestran la belleza que te puedes encontrar en un paseo de 30 minutos.

EN Who doesn't need a little reprieve from the city's hustle and bustle from time to time? Sometimes I need a mental break and like to jog or picnic in a beautiful park. Whether it's Retiro Park or the Sabatini Gardens behind the Royal Palace, there's beautiful green space all over this city to enjoy.

ES ¿Quién no necesita un descanso de la ciudad? Cuando me veo con la necesidad de un descanso mental de la locura de vivir en una ciudad, me gusta ir a correr o tener un picnic en un parque. Hay un montón de espacio verde para disfrutar, incluyendo el Parque Retiro y los Jardines de Sabatini.

EN And I can't get enough of the monuments and architecture. They hold so much history and I enjoy learning about their stories.

ES Y no me canso de visitar los monumentos y mirar la arquitectura. Disfruto mucho de aprender sobre las historias detrás de cada uno.

 

EN I highly recommend that you make some time to stop for a few good cafés con leche (and maybe a little sumptin' sweet).

ES Recomiendo que hacéis tiempo para algunos buenos cafés con leche (y quizás algo dulce).

 

EN And make room for some cocktails or Spanish wine! (The nightlife is always poppin'.)

ES ¡Y hay que hacer tiempo para tomarse un cóctel o vinito español. (La vida nocturna promete mucha diversión.)
